I recently installed gdm to see what it was like and then went back to xdm.
When I installed
xdm, it removed gdm, but now when I login at the xdm console it doesn't execute
my .xsession
file but instead just opens an xterm without a window manager.
When I then type ./.xsession in the
check /etc/X11/config for the line allow-user-xsession.

Other than not being executable, all I can think of is that you may not
have allow-user-xsession in /etc/X11/config.
that's it. I wonder why i didn't get one of those to start; I think i used to.
