Have a look at /etc/alsa/modutils/0.5. I had the same problem and I found it was caused by an incorrect statement in that file. More precisely alsaconf wrote snd-card-intel8x0 instead of snd-intel8x0. I've edited the file and now it works fine. Cheers,

Hubert and Jamin, you guys are my heroes!! Thanks so much for helping me get this sorted out. You were right, I just needed to change the via686a to via8322. After I ran update-modules though, it unloaded all of my sound modules, so I had to re-run modconf. I'll edit the /etc/modules file

I have a side question on this subject. Would it be advisable for a newbie to just apt-get this and it be configured right from the start? Last time I tried this (3 months ago) nothing happened so I just used the pnpdump command. This is what I have now but the sound is a little weak. I've
