Don't forget that your ~/.xinitrc should be executable.

The best work around for KDM is to uncomment the line that says:

I've never gotten Gnome to work with KDM, but I've gotten KDE to work
with GDM. Create a file called KDE that contains the line
/usr/bin/kde2
and save it to your /etc/gdm/Sessions directory. Set the permissions to
executable, and then you'll be able to choose KDE from the GDM login
box.
