What is the graphics card and how much memory does it have? Check /etc/X11/XF86Config (/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 if using X v4). What is the default setting there and what modes are set? I could run 16 Bit 1024x768 on an old 486 motherboard with onboard graphics card that only had 2MB memory. Wasn't super fast though, to say the least. -jackp
