No it is linux community doesn't support gif format because of it patent
for compression. But you can recompile GIMP with support for gif without

GIF uses a color map. Did you reduce the number of used colors to 256

gif-file. I can open a gif-file and save it as gif but there's no other

Did you tried to convert the image to index colors prior? GIF is a
