This depends on the medium type and state. Those commands can work with BD-RE, DVD-RAM, DVD+RW, formatted DVD-RW (via a packet device set up by pktsetup(1) from package udftools), and formatted CD-RW (formatted by cdrwtool(1) from udftools). But normally optical media are written by burn programs.
