I have a matrox G550 video card, and have XFree86 version 4.2.1. I have
a Dell monitor that accepts analog and digital input. Everything works
fine with analog input, but I was wondering how to use the digital
input. I first tried installing matrox's powerdesk software, which is
supposed to allow you to turn on DVI support. The documentation said
that it worked with XFree 4.1.0, but no mention of 4.2. When I tried to
run it, I got an error message about my driver not being compatible (I
originally used the mga one provided by matrox. Since I've upgraded to
XFree 4.2, I'm not sure if this is being used). I downloaded the latest
version of the powerdesk software from the Matrox site.

If I simply connect the digital cable (and disconnect the analog cable),
I see text (not as many lines as under analog), but it goes into
powersaving mode when X starts up.

I was wondering if anyone knew how to solve this problem. I would guess
I could edit XF86Config-4 by hand, but I'm not sure what to add. Any
help would be appreciated. Thanks,

Ric
