and I managed to make the Momodesign umts modem work under Debian Etch.
Although, the connection is very slow: 15 Kb/s whereas under MS Windows
they're about 80 Kb/s.

Mandrake both detected and set up the modem correctly. I would rather use
Debian
Don't ask my why, but the kabelfoon modem returns a "no
carrier" when a connection has been established. Just remove: ABORT
'NO CARRIER' from /etc/chatscripts/provider and it will work fine with
ppp.

Redhat Linux), following the instructions in the modem installation manual.
The manual says to give the coomand 'cat /proc/pci' and find the IRQ of the
