Have a look at GNU Stow (apt-get install stow). It lets you install locally compiled stuff into /usr/local/stow/<package-name> and builds symlink farms in /usr/local/ for you. To remove something from /usr/local/, just run stow -D /usr/local/stow/whatever and delete the dir you put it in.
