Thanks! IRQ 5 works. I can now play wav and mp3 files with XMMS.
Confused as to why the /proc/interrups file didn't help me.
Can you now tell me how to get midi file capability? xmms does
not play my midi files. neither does playmidi or mpg123.
I get the error: open /dev/sequencer: No such de

Thanks for the tip. I tried setting the IRQ to 10, as suggested with
modprobe sb esstype=1869 irq=10
I then got the error:
kernel: sb: Interrupt test on IRQ10 failed - Probable IRQ conflict
looking at /proc/interrupts shows:

1: keyboard

This is one of the right lists, since you are a user of debian;)
Another one to try might be the emu10k1 driv
sier to
configure) I had the same problem with a SB32 card. Good luck!!

Hmmm - It looks like you might be missing the 'sound' and
'soundcore' modules. These are the lower level modules
used by ad1848 and uart401.
Try doing a 'depmod -a'. That sets up the dependencies of
the modules, so the kernel knows which modules to load.
Then do 'modprobe cs4232'. Since the kernel
getting loaded. Very bizarre. It should be working.

Hi Nathan,
when you do 'lsmod', are your modules listed?
It sounds like things were working when you set it up
but then stopped working after reboot. That makes me think
that your startup files weren't told about the new modules.
I'm not familiar with modconf, so maybe that does it for ya,
but
uggestion!

Have you checked the permissions on /dev/dsp (e.g. can you play sound under
root, but not a normal user?)? You need to make sure you have right access. In
debian this is normally done by making users members of the audio group

Had the same problem, so I switched to ALSA.
I just found the problem. There was some script in init.d which
was using /dev/dsp... It was probably not during the upgrade, but when
I tried to install some other stuff (not .deb)...

Hi.
I did an apt-get update and got the new versions of some

Did you upgrade some gnome, enlightenment or sound packages? If you
did, then this could be a bug...
I' have installed a new woody some time ago but I have the same
problem now.
(it worked fine for a long time)

You need to add yours
Ian,
I've made myself a member of audio in /etc/group. Also, do you have nas
installed? If so, it will automatically start an 'au' process at
boot-time. I just removed nas from /etc/init.d since i'd never used nas
anyway. Do a ps ax to see if there is an 'au' process running.
cheers.
