Different versions of xfree86 and different options in the configfile that
come with it might be the problem.
Maybe RH already put xfree86 4.0 in their ditribution where debian did
not.

I second. My experience with different cards and monitors is
that I often have to run xf86config a few times to straighten
things out and achieve the best
