I've pulled the flash drive, and ran e2fsck on it, correcting the
errors that it found. I also emptied out a number of corrupt .list
files, as suggested earlier.
This is the error I get now:

I'm not too worried about losing anything. It's an embedded device
which runs off a flash drive, and its only purpose is to act as a file
server for a mounted USB drive. I've checked the drive and it's fine,
but its entirely possible the flash drive has been corrupted.

I fixed this by uninstalling the sendmail package, but leaving
sendmail-bin etc intact. I used the new repository to install
libsasl2. Been working since last week without problems. Not a very
satisfactory solution in the longer term.
Are we likely to see a proper fix soon?

go into /var/lib/dpkg/status with a text editor, then search for "Package:
j2re" and change that string to "Package: j2re1.4"
as you can see, libatik-java looks for "j2re1.4" not just "j2re".
this should do the trick.
