I am hit by this on one out of four virtual boxes guests running Debian 8
jessie (3 upgraded from wheezy, one installed clean).
The one behaving bad is upgraded just as the other one running the same Mac
mini host. The two others runs on another Mac mini.
The package installed on bad is exact
I experience a similar phenomenon to what Andrew Cooper recently
reported. In my case, the VirtualBox version is 4.3.20 r96997; the
host is Windows 8.1; the guest is Debian Wheezy:

if you can tyope commands / login etc
excpet it looks AFU then try this
login on the AFU Terminal
then use the command "reset"
I have found this fixes it well
BTW I put reset in my .bash_logout
so that the tty gets reset when I logout
(unfortunatly it does it in xterms t
You also may try Ctrl-v Ctrl-o and hit enter...
