Since cdrskin-1.5.2 you can inquire whether the drive announces its internal bus controller type and its firmware timestamp: cdrskin dev=/dev/sr0 --list_features | fgrep PhysInterface= cdrskin dev=/dev/sr0 --list_features | fgrep Date= I installed Debian "testing" on an external drive.

Yes, I think you understand the situation well. It does look like the DV-W5000U might be an internal IDE drive repackaged to be a modern external USB drive. I have even entertained the thought the design might be so ancient as to be a repackaged SCSI drive. Some trivia: the flagship of this
