I have had good luck with the Symbios Logic (NCR) 8751SP card. Use
the Linux driver that was ported from FreeBSD (it is in the standard
kernel config menu).

The BusLogic driver is faster, more reliable, and more robust than the
Adaptec driver. BusLogic supports free software.

AHA 2940UW works reliably here. Performance seems good though I
haven't done timing studies.
