Wow! Lots of responses. Thanks to all for your comments. Rather than
write about 15 separate replys, I'm going to address most of the points
in this one mail.

No, he's already running woody, which support

Please note you'll have to upgrade many packages in order to keep using
them with a 2.4 kernel, I recall now of pppd but there are others.
Check the docs in the kernel tarball.

I would highly recommend ext3 at this point, jus

ugrading to 2.4.18 (IMHO) gives a pretty good performance increase...
of course, i don't have any 'real' stats to prove...it just 'feels' like
it
;)
good luck and happy compiling!

p.s. the make-kpkg is so slick...why not try it...just to see how it
works...very cool indeed...

You won't notice any difference, except possibly a difference in
performance.
And, of course, in addition to the other enhancements you mention
Greetings, all.
I'm happily running woody with kernel 2.2.20, and I'm thinking of
upgrading to kernel 2.4.18. Before I do this, though, I'd like to know
more about this process -- it's been a long time since I upgraded across
minor version numbers.
First question: what are the major differences
Hi,
for compiling the kernel (Debian way) you need the following packages:
kernel-package
libc6-dev
bin86
libncurses5-dev
gcc
fakeroot
dpkg-dev
bzip2
tk8.2-dev (for make xconfig)
You can get them with 'apt-get install'. Hope that also solves your cpp
problem.
Greetz,
Sebastiaan

try finding the ncurses-dev. I've ran into that problem on the make
menuconfig, and putting ncurses-dev in, fixes it
also, install cpp
apt-get install libncurses5-dev
apt-get install cpp

I need to upgrade my base system to kernel 2.4
because the drivers for my ethernet card are simply not in kernel 2.2 (and they
are in 2.4). I have downloaded gcc and make and installed them (I think). When i
run 'make dep' after 'make config', I get the following error:
