Vanished log files after reboot

Hi! After a reboot of a virtual machine *all* old log files in /var/log and directories under that are gone (.1, .2.gz, ...). Does anyone know how that might happen? I already checked the VM for root kits and I certainly can't remember configuring something like that. TIA mad -- To
