I haven't really solved this, but at least the problem has gone away. What I didn't mention originally (because I didn't think of it) was that I had xbuffy set to blink the keyboard's led to signal new mail. As I thought through the different possible causes of this error message, I remembered that xbuffy interacts with the keyboard, so I turned off that feature of xbuffy. Since then, I haven't had an error message any more.
I don't know if this is because of a problem with the microsoft natural keyboard or because of a problem with xbuffy. Has anyone else had problems with xbuffy's led blinking feature? Thanks for the various suggestions.
