Hi, I had a similar problem once, and that seemed to be an Xauthority problem. Did you use xdm to login before installing gdm? If so, did it work fine? If it worked fine, then the problem lies somewhere else. If you didn't use xdm before, try to start X and run some app from an xterm window, like:

I just did a fresh install of woody and ximian gnome on my laptop. Everything seems to be working fine, but when I try to login using gdm it goes black like it's going into X and then goes right back to gdm. No errors of any kind appear. I've checked all the logs including the .xsession-erro
