I'm running Sid with the 2.6.5 kernel and have devfs disabled by passing 
devfs=nomount to the kernel

OK I solved this one.
It seems that gvm does not recognize soft links. I have a link from 
/dev/cdrom pointing to /dev/hdc
If I then have the following line in fstab
/dev/cdrom      /cdrom          udf,iso9660 noauto,user,ro 0      0
it doesn't work
If I change this to
/dev/hdc      /cdrom          udf,iso9660 noauto,user,ro 0      0
it does.
