thanks to anyone who can help...i am running slink (reasonably
successfully), and i have downloaded a cad/drawing program - octree -
which requires libtermcap.so.x. this library doesn't appear to be part
of the slink distribution that i have installed + i can't find the library
using

What is octree? Did you get it from Berkeley as part of the oct suite?

Point your favorite browser to here:
http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages
scroll down to the Search the Contents of the Latest Release
search engine and enter the offending file name into the box and hit
Search. For libtermcap.so.2, I got:

You can install the Midnight Commander package, I know that it gives you this
lib. I personally don't know for sure of any others.

I did a
dpkg --search libtermcap.so.2
and it couldn't find it. Does that mean that it doesn't exist anywhere
in the debian distribution?
Does anyone know where I can get it from?

No, this means that it is not installed on your system. This library is
included in termcap-compat package.
