Thanks a lot to both of you.
It turned out glibc 2.2 was not the problem.
I was installing from iso images I made on an other machine (the machine I'm
installing on is a subnote book with no cdrom) and mkisofs had decided to
rename some files.

There may be other ways to do it, but this works:
1. copy the cd files to
I have glibc 2.2.3 installed and I can play the Descent 3 demo from
loki, as the tribes 2 full version, which also states that glibc 2.1 is
a requirement.
I think loki is just trying to say that glibc 2.1 is the lowest common
denominator...
