with the following problem.
I have access to
cable internet service only intermittently. My ISP, comcast.net, provides
cable service tomy Lynksys cable modem. The modemlinks to my
iMac computer via a USB connection. The cable service also serves two

What do you mean by protocol? Authentication protocol? I have it set for
PAP/CHAP.
The same problem occurs when I try to connect to a modem on my Linux
server, which is set up for just PAP. For this connection, I dial in
using PAP only as well.

first take note your of what your modem's IRQ,I/O settings, dma
channels,etc
in windows..then install isapnptools and then run
'pnpdump/etc/isapnp.conf'(w/o the quotes of course)
modify isapnp.conf using your favorite editor (this is where your taking
notes gets handy ;)) to configure your

you'll need to add the ip addresses of your ISP's
nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Or you
add your DNS's to /etc/resolv.conf :
nameserver 1.2.3.4
nameserver 5.6.7.8
if you dont know the Domain name servers of your isp its easiest to do a
WHOIS on the domain (from a machine that has a working DNS config) and
then resolve the names internic gives you and use them.
