That is what he did when he added users in pppconfig (assuming he did it
correctly).
Did you log the users out and back in? Password and group changes don't
take effect until you do.

Wvdial is larger than pppconfig and, while perhaps easier to use, is more
complex in that it uses heuristics to get data pppconfig asks the user for.
It also uses pppd to make the actual connection. P

is that I get denied permission to pppd unless I'm logged in as root. I
added usernames under advanced options in pppconfig, and they're
certainly sitting in the appropriate place in the file vigr, so what's
missing?

pppd/pppconfig) is able to find the right port?

it probes ttyS0 and ttyS1 withut finding the
modem,

Are you saying that it finds the modem on ttyS2? Are you putting ttyS2 in
manually?
