Do you have apmd installed? What happens when you do an APM suspend?
On my laptop (DELL i8k) APM suspend works... but causes problems when resuming X. I can suspend and resume but the mouse has a strange behaviour when resumed. it's almost impossible to control it. That's the reason why I'm trying to suspend via ACPI.
