I don't think that it is hardware problem. Similar on (desktop, not laptop): 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82915G/GV/910GL Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0e) i810 driver from ubuntu (!), and older from debian works fine. Also change from intel to vesa solves problem.
