You can use a non-debianized version: the only difference is that
Debian already have qmail users and groups in /etc/passwd & /etc/

I think it's primarily because smail is so much easier to configure. I
originally set up smail and found it quite easy to deal with. Just this
week, however, I had to install sendmail to get a particular app
sendmail has a different security hole every week, smail has not. Smail
works EASILLY with UUCP, sendmail is more difficult, particularly when you
are trying to manage routing in a large network.
For the vast majority of cases, smail is much MUCH easier to configure and
a lot easier to follow fr
