Even if you are not noticing the disk activity it is almost for sure there. Try
playing with hdparm to speed up your disk and this will go away it worked for
me.

and then it takes a good 10-15 seconds for gnome panel to pop up. The doubt
is, there is no disk activity at the interval. Why the delay, and can I
speed it up a bit?
