I've been using startx to start X for as long as I've been using Linux -
about 10 years or more. Yesterday it stopped working, giving an error
message about /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc - no such option. But xinit
runs as expected. This is on a laptop running Sid.

I am running the unstable branch of debian and everything was great until I
did an upgrade and then startx broke. I tried downgrading a bunch of
packages that I thought were related (including xbase-clients, which created
startx).
To start X, I can do:
$ X
$ DISPLAY=:0 kde2

However, you might find the following helpful:
$ X
$ DISPLAY=:0 gnome-session
... worked for me to get gnome running. Replace 'gnome-session' with 'kde2'
and it will start

Just did an upgrade and now startx does not work. Can start xdm, but
will now go further then the login screen.

It is an issue with the pam modules/library. Happened
after you specifically updated your 'libpam0g' package.
