Thank you for replying. I have now tried this:
modprobe snd-seq-oss, but it gives an error:

You're lacking snd-seq-oss, the OSS compatibility module for the ALSA
sequencer.

Hi all,
I have a VIA PCI audio controller, and it works almost perfectly on my system.
Only I can't play MIDI files: /dev/sequencer can't be opened.
This is a part of the output of lsmod:

snd_pcm87972 2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_via82xx

(Forgive me if this seems stupid -- I've confused myself utterly.)
Installed Woody 3.0r1, mostly from CD-ROM, on a laptop.
Using kernel image 2.2.20 idepci. PCMCIA support is perfect.
I want to try out some audio stuff, and need module via82cxxx.
However, this isn't available for 2.2

Will this be rolled into woody? when?
I am curious about the backround. Is this a different source of code
for supporting the chipset, as was used before?

This problem is solved for me with version 1.9.1 of the via82cxxx_audio

Hi again,
in 2.4.3 it works with the same options that 2.4.6/9 ... doesn't work with.
Just tried it.
So it must be really a bug.
Either in via82cxxx or pci quirks.c .
I guess I will file a bugreport.

I guess you've been onto the via-kernel driver list. That seems to be the
standard response on there. Odd for a development list.

Hi,
I have a MSI 694d board with onboard audio with via82cxxx chip. I'm
having severe problems trying to get the sound working. When compiling
the kernel I selected modular sound card support and modular OSS sound
