I switched to coderay, which was pretty easy to implement even though I had no prior experience with syntax or coderay until I switched the Chef webui. It looks like the only part of cucumber that actually uses the syntax highlighting is a couple simple lines and should be relatively easy to get upstream to patch. I'm sure they'd be open to doing so given that Jamis doesn't maintain the syntax library anymore and he recommended I use coderay instead of his own.
