quickly in an xterm or a powershell, I can get clicks on the speakers.
If I scroll a large file quickly in an Xterm, I can (a) degrade
the playing quality of an mp3 unacceptably and (b) get the XServer
to use up 60% CPU time

copies.

Same here, on my TNT2 viper v770. Every time X starts up, the brightness of the
text on the virtual consoles is halved. After about 3 goes round, the consoles
are unusable, though X continues to display at the expected brightness.
I'm certain this is an upstream problem, and not a debian one.
