I found a tiny bug in config/cf/linux.cf.
It includes HPArchitecture related defines twice, like this:

Except that I definitely had both modules loaded with X4.1. I didn't
touch my XF86Config-4 file after pulling down the X4.2, and thus the
failure. I removed the xtt module, and it worked.
Maybe X4.1 throws a soft error,
