I'm also seeing this same bug on my NEC Versa SX (same chipset). As with the others it only happens in 16bit mode (but 8bit mode is not that useful these days). I also downgraded to 4.1.0_16: apt-get install xserver-xfree86=4.1.0-16 and that worked (note I had to halt my system and power down
