Well, a bit *more* perusing the bugs list (yes, I *did* look before
reporting, but failed to find the relevant bug ...) led me to create the
symlink /usr/lib/libcurl.so.2 -- /usr/lib/so.3.0.0, which unlocked

I'm getting the same problem, kdm won't start on it's own, I get the

I recently saw the same problem (packages scripts failing with exit
status 127) and found the following (inexplicable) workaround - use dash
for /bin/sh instead of bash... Don't know if that is a general solution
or I just got lucky, but I thought I'd pass it along.

I traced dpkg -i xserver-xfree86_4.3.0.dfsg.1-4_i386.deb and saw that it was
looking for libcurl.so.2. However, the library in the unstable version of
libcurl2 is now libcurl.so.3. The problem disappears

apparently the update of libcurl2 which has just been uploaded
(version 7.12.0.is.7.11.2-1 ) has fixed the problem for me.
