Because of bug #345958 I can no longer use Debian testing. :(
Could it be possible to put xserver-xorg 6.8.2, which worked well,
back on testing?
Best regards,

http://snapshot.debian.net/ is a good place to look for things like

Hi,
I'm seeking advice on the following problem:
- xvfb-run bails out on nonexistant / not root-owned /tmp/.X11-unix,
- a/my pbuilder chroot won't have /tmp/.X11-unix,
- I need some X (xvfb is fine) to build libaqbanking (glade-2 code
generation needs X bug).
A working work-around is

Maybe it would have made sense to put a note somewhere about such
things, in my case I just found I can't type Hebrew any more and no note
to say anything about it.
Or maybe even automatic renaming of the field in the configuration file.

We can do that. Where do you expect to see this note?

It sounds like switching to MergedFB mode or the fglrx drivers fixes the
problem for everyone - the bug only surfaces when trying to use the two card
outputs independently (for example, by configuring two Device sections for the
two outputs of the card, then using Xinerama). Unfortunately,

I have the same problems after I updated from 6.8.2. to
6.9.0.dfsg.1-4. Like the OP I also have an old ATI Radeon 7000. I did
a backtrace which looked exactly like the one Seiden Tiger already posted. I
also had no luck using the SWCursor option, but the backtrace looks a
bit different:

It's supposed to. The app-defaults file already uses that pattern
(and has for several years).
You have to use a more-specific one, e.g.,

Do you know what the more general problem is? I guess it could be
that s-s-d requires that the /proc/ exe name matches, and it may
not, because xdm moved between /usr/bin/X11/xdm and
/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm. Is that what you think?
