Tried with radeon-force-some-clocks.diff, twice. One of the times I got much
further (I could actualy play the game, rather than only reach the menus), but
it also crashed after a very short time (1/2 minutes). The second time it just
crashed in the menus as usual.
The X server log is also diff
I had the exact same problem and temporarily fixed it by downloading
an older version of libSM.6.0.0 (in
libsm6_4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1_i386.deb) and used it to replace the
new one in /usr/lib. KDE has been working fine so far.
I hope the next upgrade to the libSM package fixes it.

I think I hit this bug, too:
- Total display lock (but system still up, I could login via ssh)
- X went crazy and started sucking 99% cpu
- X not killable, even with SIGKILL (wondering how this can happen in
userspace).
- On Linux 2.6.17. It didn't happen to me before with 2.6.8, but

In addition to removing xorg.conf, in 1:7.0.22, you may have to also
perform the following:
sudo sh -c "readlink /etc/X11/X | md5sum > /var/lib/x11/X.md5sum"
See #374578.
Having just installed xserver-xorg with fluxbox, colours were displayed
incorrectly and some applications were having trouble finding colours (same as
above, cannot find black etc).
Creating a legacy symlink in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb.txt to /etc/X11/rgb.txt
fixed the problem though. Confusing tho
