Adding more information, I added ibm-acpi to my /etc/modules so my thinkpad is fully acpi-functional and guess what? The brightness is not modified anymore!. I suspect that without ibm-acpi, acpid or something else was giving/reading bogus values about AC or battery and so the display kept dimming
