I can confirm that after an upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze, Compiz
(0.8.2-6) ran substantially slower on Intel 82865G graphics. The
spinning cube would jerk its way around rather than spin. The earlier
suggestion to change acceleration to XAA in xorg.conf fixed the problem.

I think you can safely close this bug since
it was indeed a configuration issue.
Removing fglrx-glx restored the original libGL and
all is well now.
I am attaching a configuration checker to check the
consistency of libGL and the graphics driver used for X.

FYI, I've seen this issue as well and while initially my thought was that hal
must have been the culprit, a forced downgrade to xkb-data 1.3 (via apt-get
source and manual installation through dpkg -i) fixes the issue for me. The
report is available as #530585.
