Hello,
I recently upgraded my kernel to 2.6.30-2 from 2.6.22-something, and the
crashes no longer happen.
This could explain why other people had trouble reproducing this bug.
Maybe this could be resolved by a Conflicts: or Depends: line.

You're right, the changelog is mentioning the relevant patches were
merged somewhere between 1.6.4RC1 and 1.6.4.
BUT, since g-p-m is still reporting a broken display driver
The bug fix in http://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=30489 fixed the
problem for me. I hope that this fix can be applied to the next version of
xkb-data.
