Nevermind. I got it working, found some info on a gentoo forum.
Apparently you can't use framebuffer with KMS which makes sense and I
never used KMS so I didn't know this. So in case anyone else asks, I
removed the framebuffer drivers and got it booting.

I have similar problem in my two machines - one laptop and one desktop.
In fact after the problem appears, screen gets black and I'm not able to
ssh into these machines to get any logs.

The Submitter of this bug report mentioned that it may be resurrected
bug #593432.
In fact the 593432 has been fixed by either disabling (in config file)
or blacklisting KMS for some chipsets.
Now the authors of xserver-xorg-video-intel made KMS mandatory,
