Package: xserver-xorg Version: 7.5+8 Tags: patch xserver-xorg now no longer creates xorg.conf but XF86Config-4 is not deleted when purged. So purging and reinstalling even the whole xorg stack can lead to X not starting because looking into the old file. I'd suggest removing it in purge. diff -r
