Oh... I just did dpkg-reconfigure using the -phigh option, assuming that the 
default
answers would yield a minimal working config. Without the -phigh the dialog on 
the
XkbVariant is indeed pre-filled with "dead". Maybe I mis-answered a long time 
ago,
and there is some memory of these answers despite moving the old xorg.conf 
away, and
it somehow had no consequence until now. In any case you are definitely right.

Nothing either it seems. 

So it appears this bug is misplaced, sorry for having put the blame on the 
xorg.conf
generating scripts. The absence of warning is a bug or at least a strong 
wishlist
item, but maybe in another package ? I suggest this bug be retitled "no warning 
and
broken VT switching in case of an incorrect XkbVariant in xorg.conf". If you'd
rather close this bug, where do you suggest I resubmit a more specific request 
about
the missing warning (and breaking VT switching instead of just ignoring the
incorrect XkbVariant) in the case of an invalid XkbVariant ?
