If an external display has been active on the VGA port, the
X server switches the display to a text console when the VGA
cable is unplugged, and trying to return (with Alt+Fnn) to
the X server vt hangs the console
ped working at some point; IIRC at the same time
as xterm got colour support. It definitely works in the xterm distributed
with Solaris (2.)8, which, if memory serves, is X11R6.1 (just tested it
there).

Some random older xterm on a Sun/Solars box doesn't do this, so I
suspect it came with the colour support.
