the problem and causes the
same problems. Forcing KDE's kwin to use direct rendering still works
though.

This may be a duplicate of 266118. If so, it has vastly
increased in scope, as I never had this before,
and it turned up when I upgraded lenny to squeeze,
same hardware.
Uninstalling unclutter fixes the issue (well, except for now
having the cursor arund all the time).

Yes, it appears so:
aschuring@neminis:~$ file /usr/bin/X
/usr/bin/X: ERROR: cannot open `/usr/bin/X' (No such file or directory)
aschuring@neminis:~$ apt-file search /usr/bin/X | grep -w X
xserver-xorg: /usr/bin/X
But that shouldn't really be surprising given that xse
file, and give you this instead:
aschuring@neminis:~$ grep -v ^# /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config
allowed_users=console
(note that I have tried with both "anyone" and "console" -- choices 2
and 3 from dpkg-reconfigure x11-common -- but neither works).
Thanks,
Arno

It appears to be no longer possible to start X as non-root user, regardless
of the x11-common configuration. I don't use this too often, so I can't say
exactly when it broke. I do remember that this worked fine before Squeeze was
released though

Tried, tested, and confirmed:

Thanks! It indeed appears to be the same bug.

I've asked upstream for confirmation. At the very least, I think this should be
noted in the radeon manual page.
However, it must not have been that broken since I've been using 16-bit since
forever...

I'm also seeing that bug. Could it be related to bug #567563 ?

Since I'm thinking about testing the whole kms-thing anyway as soon as
it's in the mainline kernel, is there any chance that the radeon-rewrite
