The above patch for 421772 when applied has solved a great deal of font
rendering trouble particularly wrt to KHTML. In my case, my very old CRT
comes up with some very bad dpi settings. H
Within 12 hours, all the 1G of RAM on my laptop will be used up.
A good site that triggers this behaviour is http://www.theage.com.au, my
local newspapers page. There's a fair few flash objects on there, and in
these situations I usually blame that, but I have no proof.

I logged in
with a failsafe xterm session. Running compiz works (no need for
--replace), but gtk-window-decorator still complains.
Any ideas? Or should I just wait until the new-fangled compiz-fusion
arrives in unstable? It's not like I absolutely --must-have-- window
decorations.

$which synclient showed an old version at
/usr/local/bin.
I must have put it there for some reason sometime, but
have no recollection. Deleting it solved the problem.

It turned out to be coincidental that this bug showed up on my system at
the same time that the -9 version of the xfree86 packages were released.
It turns out that you must not use the "--force-tls=classic" switch with
the nvidia package install for a clean install AND use the 2.6.9 kernel.

Now that I've switched the gpm repeater to ms3, switching from console to
X is a lot faster. Thanks for pointing that out. But could you configure
that package to, say, pop up a warning dialog about this before you throw
