Yes, and the X-Strike force certainly do a wonderful job ensuring that
XFree86 can support as many arch's as possible.
Thanks for the explainations! It's good to know where all these things come
from and where they are heading.

Of course I'd love to read more about this PIC -VS- non-PIC issue and what
it means in real terms for Linux and programming in general.

There are many people here, but mostly they deal with tracking bugs in
Branden's packages. The Debian-user list is a much better place to ask.

I know this isn't much help for a newbie, but keep at it. Debian is certainly
worth the effort to learn.

x.gz
xbase-clients: /usr/X11R6/bin/xinit
xfce: /etc/X11/xfce/xinitrc.mwm

shows it should be in xbase-clients, but apt does not see it? Even dpkg -i
fails with the same.

I'll attach /var/log/XFree86.0.log so you can see where it's failing and let
me know what I did wrong?
Hopefully, to re-compiled stuff will work, Acellerated X is fine, but it's
only the demo, and it does not support AA yet.

4.2.0 into Debian! And, as Branden has
mentioned before, Debian provides the cross-platform testbed for XFree86. The
XFree86.org only builds for i386, Debian X Strike Force, especially Branden
port it to all the other processors Debian supports! Amazing amount of work
when you think about it!

sure that the next dist-upgrade will not thrash my currently working X. I'd
hate to spend several more days building, installing and tweaking 4.2.0
sources again.

lf. Branden has
quite a bit of other things to worry about that just how to install on i386,
though. Let him work on the quality he's so renowned for and jsut install
what you need for yourself.
Just my 1.54 Euro's worth.

the rest of X would upgrade and fix itself, but to no

more problems.
Thanks for any help that can be offered, and I can copy and append any logs
or other files that might be of help in finding the cause of my current X
problems.
