I have the same behavior on my dell latitude d410. In my case, the X screen seems to go blank for a fraction of a section and then turns to garbage (looks like wrong video mode). Mouse is irresponsible, as are crtl+alt+backspace and ctrl+alt+Fn. X log goes attached, as well as the output of ls
