There used to by the intl XkbLayout. I would have an InputDevice stanza
for the keyboard like the following:

there is no /etc/X11/Xsession. is this legacy, not been updated to

with regard to the complaint about /etc/X11/X, I compared with another
system. on the other one it was a relative symlink, on the current
system with the error it was absolute. so i recreated it as relative,
identical to other system, but this complaint still occurs.
also, it is true that /var/
