Finally I got around to re-enabling DPMS and managed to reproduce the
problem. Currently the monitor is stuck in power-saving mode and no
amount of banging the keyboard or wiggling the mouse is waking it, but I
can still SSH to the machine and "do stuff".

I believe I am experiencing a similar problem with Ubuntu Dapper and an
Aladdin TNT2 card (on-board) with the "nv" Driver of Xorg. It only
seems to happen for me when DPMS is enabled -- disabling DPMS causes the
problem to go away, but the monitor never goes into power-saving mode,
